Ten Bridges and 100 Culverts on the Beji–Jangara–Wushishi Road
Section III of the Beji–Jangara–Wushishi Road includes 10 bridges with a combined length of 300 m, plus 100 culverts and 20,000 m of longitudinal drainage. Together, they carry the road across streams and keep water away from the pavement.
Key facts
- Bridges: 10, combined length 300 m (8 RC + 2 PSC)
- PSC bridges: B1 with three 30 m spans, B2 with two; 25 PSC I-girders of 30 m
- Bored piles: 1,008 m of 1,000 mm diameter
- Elastomeric bearings: 138
- Culverts: 100, combined length 2,540 m
- Longitudinal drainage: 20,000 m
Bridges
Eight of the bridges are reinforced concrete (RC) T-beam or solid slab bridges, and two are prestressed concrete (PSC) I-girder bridges.
| Bridge type | No. / length |
|---|---|
| RC T-beam / solid slab bridges | 8 / 150 m |
| PSC I-girder bridges, 30 m spans | 2 / 150 m |
| Total bridges | 10 / 300 m |
The two PSC bridges are the largest structures on the route. Bridge B1 has three 30 m spans, and Bridge B2 has two.
These bridges use 25 PSC I-girders, each 30 m long. They stand on 1,008 m of 1,000 mm diameter bored piles, which carry loads deep into firm ground. In total, 138 elastomeric bearings were installed across the bridges, letting the decks move slightly with temperature and traffic.
The bridge works covered foundations, bored piles, piers, abutments, girders, bearings and associated structural works.
Culverts
| Culvert type | No. / length |
|---|---|
| RC pipe culverts, 600/900/1200 mm | 70 / 1,790 m |
| RC box culverts, 1- and 2-cell | 30 / 750 m |
| Total culverts | 100 / 2,540 m |
Culverts let streams and run-off pass under the road without overtopping it.
Longitudinal drainage
Side drains and U-drains collect surface water, while subsoil drains remove water from within the ground beneath the road. Keeping the pavement layers dry helps the road last longer and reduces maintenance.
| Drainage element | Length |
|---|---|
| Concrete-lined trapezoidal side drains | 14,000 m |
| Covered concrete U-drains | 3,000 m |
| Stone-pitched / invert-block channels | 1,500 m |
| Subsoil drains | 1,500 m |
| Total longitudinal drainage | 20,000 m |

Frequently asked questions
How many bridges are on Section III?
There are 10 bridges with a combined length of 300 m: eight RC T-beam or solid slab bridges (150 m) and two PSC I-girder bridges with 30 m spans (150 m).
What foundations do the PSC bridges use?
They stand on 1,008 m of 1,000 mm diameter bored piles, which carry loads deep into firm ground. In total 138 elastomeric bearings were installed across the bridges.
How many culverts are on the road?
There are 100 culverts with a combined length of 2,540 m: 70 RC pipe culverts (600, 900 and 1,200 mm) and 30 RC box culverts (1- and 2-cell).
What does the longitudinal drainage consist of?
20,000 m in total: 14,000 m of concrete-lined trapezoidal side drains, 3,000 m of covered U-drains, 1,500 m of stone-pitched or invert-block channels and 1,500 m of subsoil drains.
